According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the main conditions causing distance vision impairment or blindness are cataract (94 million), refractive error (88.4 million), age-related macular degeneration (8 million), glaucoma (7.7 million), diabetic retinopathy (3.9 million).
An estimated 1 billion cases has been systematically sampled to come up with the abovementioned statistics. However, there are various underreported cases, especially in the developing world where the healthcare systems are not up to standard.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology further states that more than 7 million Americans have low vision (defined as best-corrected visual acuity worse than or equal to 20/40 in the better-seeing eye.
